Spokesperson for the United Progressive Party (UPP) Joanne Massiah has confirmed that if the UPP wins the forthcoming general elections it will continue Personal Income Tax (PIT).  The UPP hopeful hinted that indeed the UPP might increase the level and scope of income taxes to capture even more classes of workers and scale of earnings. Massiah was responding to an unprecedented media statement by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) that strongly criticised the UPP government saying that the country’s “fiscal situation is unstable” and that the “macroeconomic performance has deteriorated in the months following the Stand-by Arrangement with the Fund”. ABLP Feels Vindicated with the Appellate Court’s Decision- Hon. Gaston Browne

April 29, 2014 @ 11:56 AM

Fellow Citizens and Residents of Antigua and Barbuda, we now know the decision of the Court of Appeal in respect of the litigations covering the ‘Boundaries’ and the ‘Re-registration of Voters’ for the upcoming General Elections that should have been held already. In as much as we disagree with the finding of the Court of Appeal, in the re-registration case, that the 2010 Act altered existing rights prospectively and not retrospectively, we still respect the decision of the Court. Had time permit, we could have considered appealing the decision. The Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party feels vindicated with the decision [...]

The outcome of these litigations represent a victory for the people and the Antigua & Barbuda Labour Party. The decision is in keeping with our agreement to hold the elections on the Existing boundaries and the new register of electors. We maintain that the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party would have won the upcoming general elections irrespective of the outcome of the litigations (Old Boundaries/ new Boundaries, Old/ New list. Prime Minister Spencer has no further excuses, Call [...]

REDY to Rebuild Our Tourism Tourism is the largest industry in the world. As a matter of fact, it is estimated that the Travel & Tourism sector accounts for more than 9% of the global GDP. The economy of the Caribbean region, especially, developed through tourism which was a welcomed substitute for the colonial cash-crop economy. Undoubtedly, tourism has turned Antigua & Barbuda into one of the Caribbean’s most flourishing economies. It provides employment for our nationals, earns foreign exchange, provides revenue for our government, raises national income and has even promoted a consciousness of our culture and history. However, [...]
