Wednesday, May 21st is a significant day in the political lives of many Antiguans and Barbudans. Firstly, it is nomination day for the candidates and secondly, it is the day on which the distribution of voter identification cards begins. Antiguans and Barbudans go to the polls on June 12th, 2014. Public Relations Officer for the Antigua and Barbuda Electoral Commission (ABEC), Anne Harewood-George agrees that there is a lot taking place in the twin-island state, as it relates to the electoral process. She says that with the imminence of elections, “one of the things that we are going to be [...]
Media Statement The Leader of the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party (ABLP), the Honourable Gaston Browne, calls upon the leader of the United Progressive Party (UPP), Mr. Baldwin Spencer, to explain the conditions and terms controlling the sale or transfer of Government’s interest in the Cedar Valley Golf Course. A recent news item reports that all of Government’s shares in the golf course, valued at tens of millions of dollars and held for more than fifty years, have been transferred to Bau Panel, the company that has already been given almost 200 acres of government land. The outgoing administration has [...]
“We have to work very hard,” says Leader of the ABLP knowing full well that a day in politics can be a very long and sometimes unkind day. While speaking confident and very hopeful, Browne warned against complacency while sincerely suggesting that it is the people of Antigua and Barbuda that makes the difference, and that will be needed to take the country forward. The “gimmick programmes” being offered by the UPP at the eleventh hour are indicative of the plight faced by so many thousands of unemployed or underemployed persons over the past few years. Browne is suggesting, take [...]
REDY to Rebuild Our Tourism Tourism is the largest industry in the world. As a matter of fact, it is estimated that the Travel & Tourism sector accounts for more than 9% of the global GDP. The economy of the Caribbean region, especially, developed through tourism which was a welcomed substitute for the colonial cash-crop economy. Undoubtedly, tourism has turned Antigua & Barbuda into one of the Caribbean’s most flourishing economies. It provides employment for our nationals, earns foreign exchange, provides revenue for our government, raises national income and has even promoted a consciousness of our culture and history. However, [...]
Last night I heard the Prime Minister accuse the Eastern Caribbean Court of Appeal of ‘extra ordinary and inexplicable delay.’ This is an extraordinary and disingenuous allegation by the Prime Minister, and another transparent example of a complete lack of honest leadership. The Court of Appeal is now his political excuse for his failures as Leader and the complete mess and delays engineered by himself, his party and cronies on the various Commissions. The Labour Party condemns this cheap shot at the integrity of the Court of Appeal. The Court is fully aware of its obligations to the people of [...]
