New Ambassador makes Courtesy Call on Prime Minister Browne

SAM_5816 (1)ST. JOHN’S, Antigua and Barbuda – 19th November, 2014…….. Prime Minister, the Honourable Gaston Browne on Tuesday received a courtesy call from His Excellency Mr. Aydin Evirgen, the newly accredited Ambassador of the Republic of Turkey to Antigua and Barbuda.

During their deliberations Prime Minister Browne expressed his pleasure in taking a further step to deepen and strengthen relations between the two countries. Ambassador Evirgen in his response thanked the Prime Minister for extending the kind courtesies to him and noted that he looks forward to exploring the cooperation between the two countries in the area of trade, investments and education.

Throughout their discussion, Prime Minister Browne commended Turkey for its steady ascension, through economic development and cementing its place on the International Stage. The Prime Minister also indicated that Turkey has been a genuine friend of Antigua and Barbuda and could learn much from their counterpart in the area of economic development. Furthermore, the Prime Minister stated his Government’s intention of establishing an Embassy in the Republic of Turkey, which he discussed with His Excellency Tayyip Erdogan, President of the Republic of Turkey at the U.N General Assembly.

Ambassador Evirgen stated that he would ensure that businessmen and members of the private sector within Turkey get the opportunity to visit Antigua and Barbuda to explore potential investment opportunities. Additionally, both parties discussed scholarship opportunities provided by the Government of Turkey, Visa Waivers between both countries, development projects under a grant from Turkey and the provision of a fire tender for the new V.C. Bird International Airport.

During his visit, Ambassador Evirgen presented credentials to H.E. Sir Rodney Williams, Governor-General, and met with Hon. Baldwin Spencer, Leader of the Opposition, H.E. Colin Murdoch, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, Mr. Maurice Merchant, Chairperson of the Prime Minister’s Scholarship Committee and other senior officials within the Ministry.

Antigua and Barbuda established diplomatic relations with the Republic of Turkey in June, 1999.
