Italian Students Learn about Antigua and Barbuda’s work at the United Nations
NEW YORK, NY, USA – 12th March 2015……..The Permanent Mission of Antigua and Barbuda in New York recently hosted twenty-nine students from various schools and colleges in Italy who were representing Antigua and Barbuda at the annual Model United Nations Conference held at the UN Headquarters from March 4th– 6th, 2015.
The students were briefed by the Permanent Representative, Ambassador H.E. Walton Webson, and Counsellor Tumasie Blair on the work done by the Antigua and Barbuda Permanent Mission in New York and its diplomatic roles and relationships in multilateral affairs. They also discussed the unique position that Antigua and Barbuda holds as a small island developing state and how this impacts negotiations particularly regarding the right to development. The students were also lectured on Antigua and Barbuda’s foreign policy and regional integration.
Ambassador Webson and Mr. Blair also took the opportunity to answer questions from the students relating to debates in the committees and agencies they were assigned to. The students posed questions on Antigua and Barbuda’s position regarding international labour laws, the Commission on the Status of Women, renewable energy, international taxation and the work being done in Antigua and Barbuda in addressing the issues of slums and the threat to development.
Ambassador Webson also announced that he will be working on having schools from Antigua and Barbuda participate in future model UN programmes. (ENDS)
