ST. JOHN’S, Antigua and Barbuda – November 17, 2014…………….With a high pass mark for the successful staging of the recently concluded 33rdIndependence celebrations in Antigua Barbuda, the newly appointed Festivals Commission- ABFC, is moving forward with plans for the Sir Lester Bird Lighting Competition and the commemoration of V.C. Bird Day, celebrating the work and contributions to Antigua and Barbuda’s development by the country’s most celebrated National Hero and Father of the Nation.

The Festivals Commission on Tuesday announced the final two (2) activities which will close the calendar of events for 2014: the Sir. V. C. Bird Day, to be celebrated on December 9, the birthday of the late Father of the Nation, The Rt. Hon. Sir V. C. Bird and the Sir Lester Bird Lighting Competition.

This year, Sir V.C. Bird Day will be celebrated with school programmes programmes highlighting the contributions and work of the Father of the Nation and the country’s first National Hero. The transforming of his former dwelling home into a museum, a radio programme highlighting speeches and songs in his honour, a Church Service and a Ceremony at Sir V. C. Bird bust in St. John’s will form part of the activities to celebrate the Father of the Nation.

The Sir Lester Bird Lighting Competition is open to business places, homeowners and community groups in a competition celebrating the Christmas season. Participants have been asked to be creative in their designs capturing the true spirit and meaning of Christmas.

“The ABFC is revitalizing this event after a ten (10) year hiatus and it will form an integral part of the Christmas Season in Antigua and Barbuda from here on, bringing back the festive Christmas spirit of years past.  The entire nation will be divided into five zones (East, West, North, South and Barbuda) with six focal points where special trees will be erected and decorated celebrating the season.  The competition is also a launch pad for improved activities for 2015,”according to Chairman of the Commission Cliff Williams.

Registration forms are available at the National Festivals Commission Office, ABS Television, Baileys Supermarket, Epicurean Fine Foods, Asot’s Arcade, Cecil George-John, All Saints and Parham Police Stations, Johnsons Point Clinic and the Barbuda Council Office.

Closing date for registration is 5th of December 2014. Prejudging will commence on 12th of December and final judging will begin on the 18 December 2014.
